There are many different ways to treat cancer, however, it largely depends on the type of cancer you have and how advanced it is. At HOPE Cancer Center of East Texas, we offer complete, advanced services and treatment for cancer. We offer special testing to look for certain genetic markers. These markers help us identify which treatments are more (or less) likely to effectively treat your unique cancer.
Cancer treatment options
Cancer treatment can consist of one or more several types of treatment. Your oncology team will make sure you get the right treatment based on today’s most proven protocols. Treatments include:
For most cancers, there is a surgery tailored to treat it. It depends on the part of the body that requires surgery and the amount of tissue to be removed. Depending on the size and severity of the cancer, surgery may be open or minimally invasive.
Chemotherapy is a type of treatment that uses medications to treat cancer. The medications can be taken orally or intravenously. This treatment is considered as a systematic therapy because it affects the entire body, not just the cancer cells. Chemo medications attack rapidly growing cancer cells, but they can also attack healthy cells that are growing rapidly. When your healthy cells are compromised as well, you are vulnerable to many side effects like infection, anemia, fatigue, nausea and diarrhea. Fortunately, many of these side effects can be managed with the help of your doctor.
- Radiation therapy
This treatment uses high doses of radiation to eradicate cancer cells and shrink tumors. For some people, radiation therapy may be the only treatment that is required. But most often, this treatment is used in combination with chemotherapy and surgery.
- Clinical trials
At HOPE Cancer Center we participate in clinical trials for anti-cancer medications to help advance toward the cure and give new hope to people who aren’t helped by existing treatments.
