There are many common types of cancer, and they all start the same way. Cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow, divide and multiply at a rapid rate, resulting in cancerous tumors and growths. Though cancer comes in many forms and can occur almost anywhere in the body, there are a few significant warning signs to be aware of, including:
- A new lump or growth
- A persistent cough that doesn’t go away
- Abnormal bleeding
- Change in bowel movements
- Unexplained weight loss
Female breast cancer
The most common type of breast cancer is ductal carcinoma, which starts in the cells of the ducts, lobules and other tissues within the breast. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer that affects women, after skin cancer.
Though one of the most common cancers, lung cancer is also one of the most preventable. The two types of lung cancer include non-small cell lung cancer (most common) and small cell lung cancer. You can significantly reduce your risk for lung cancer by quitting or avoiding tobacco products, including smoking.
After skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. Typically developing in men over 65, prostate cancer is an extremely slow-growing cancer that rarely exhibits any symptoms in its early stages.
Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. It often forms in skin that’s had high exposure to sunlight, although it can develop in any area of the skin. Skin cancer starts in the epidermis (outer layer), which contains squamous cells, basal cells and melanocytes. If melanoma isn’t caught early, it can metastasize to other parts of the body.
