October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM). This is an important time to focus our attention on education and awareness of the second most common kind of cancer in women.

Each year, you can find national and local BCAM events in which to participate. But if you would like to do more in your community, there are several ways you can play your part. You can make a significant impact by spreading the word about mammograms and breast self-exams, and encouraging communities, organizations, families and local businesses to get involved.

Be a voice for breast cancer awareness

Reach out to women in your community about detecting breast cancer early. Start by reminding those in your immediate network to get screened:

  • Encourage family and friends to talk with their doctors about when to start getting mammograms

Or partner with your community health center to give you a platform from which to send your message:

  • Organize a community event on National Mammography Day (October 21, 2016) to educate women ages 50 to 74 about getting mammograms every two years

Make breast cancer awareness a social topic

Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumbler, Snapchat and others provide a way to “broadcast” messages about early detection, events and other important topics regarding breast cancer awareness. Here are a few ways you can use social media or the Internet to spread the word:

  • Add information about breast self-exams or breast cancer screenings to your newsletter or blog
  • Frequently share facts about breast cancer awareness
  • Publicize local BCAM events and invite friends to participate
  • Add a BCAM web badge or survivor tribute to your website, blog or favorite social networking profile
